in memory of Molly Murray, aka @amalari

Taken on iPhone 3G S, edited with Camera+ and Colorsplash Apps

This is my favourite photograph (of all those I have taken), I post it here in memory of the wonderful Molly Murray, who died on Sunday.

Who was Molly? One the first people I met on Twitter, where she was known as @amalari. She also was one of the first people on Twitter to move-up from 'someone in my stream' to someone I'd call a friend.

When I started blogging, Molly was my trusted mentor, always kind enough to read my posts and give them the nod before I dared to publish. And then, of course, she'd sing my praises all over Twitter to her gazillion followers, making me blush with embarrassment, but in such a nice way.

Her writing, photography and love of life are all still with us, on her Blipfoto page "Tuscany". If you did not get to know her, you still can on those pages. If you wished you'd known her more, ditto.

She will be so very missed.

A blog post Molly wrote for Blipfoto just before she died, 'Tuscan Way'

  2. Hello Moochie :) Great to hear from you. The woodshed gang has indeed scattered to the four winds, and in only three years. But it was splendid whilst it lasted! Thanks for getting in touch, I'll let Jamie know. Much love to you. Angela.

  3. That's a beautiful photo! I can't decide whether it suggests a stone fountain more or a tree. But you haven't said where you took it.

I definitely come into the category of people who knew Molly via Twitter but now wish they had known her better. I went through a phase (having met her through you) of chatting to her quite a lot, about animals, about Native Americans (including my going on a sweat lodge) and I can't remember what else. She was always very informed and interesting, and always very kind. She was a bit like an auntie or maybe a best friend's mum – she seemed older than me (though I dare say she wasn't) because she had seen and done so much and also because she was so kind.

Then I drifted away to another part of the vast Twitter crowd – but I did at one point say to Molly, "I'm sorry I haven't chatted to you lately, but I still think of you as a good friend" and she said the same. I always regarded her as one of my core of Twitter friends – like you – even if my mind has been elsewhere. I suppose you always have a soft spot for the first people who befriend you.

I didn't make time to follow her Blip photos, but they are extraordinarily good and I'm glad that they're still there – I'm sorry that Twitter has deleted all record of my past chats with Molly. I felt very sad – surprisingly so – when I heard that she had died. I think if I had been following her Blipping, I would have been just stunned when the stream came to such an unexpected end. Poor Himself, and poor Luigi, to lose her.

  4. Thank you Huw for this very honest and moving addition to my small tribute. And thanks for mentioning Himself and Luigi - something I should have done in the post.

We did have quite a few debates on Twitter didn't we? And I am sure you and Molly first started about the controversy of #FollowFriday.

She was everyone's favourite aunty, wasn't she?

I picked this photograph as it combines history, beauty and wonder. God is there too, if you're seeking God, as is the feeling of an innocent arriving in a new, glorious place. All these things resonate right now.

For the record, the picture shows the Chapter House at Lincoln Cathedral (England). The child is, of course, mine.

  7. So Blogger had a breakdown just after this post was published, and deleted all the comments. Luckily I had them all on email, so I can re-post:
